Mr. Gan Peng Kheang, our Principal, started off the event with a speech after the rendition of ‘Negaraku’ and the ‘Lagu Wilayah’ anthems. He highlighted the academic achievements of the school and congratulated all the students who had performed outstandingly. He hoped that the school will continue to attain excellence in every aspect, in line with the school’s aim in providing a holistic education to all students. Mr. Chang was the next person at the podium to deliver his inspiring speech . He praised the efforts of all the students and teachers in producing excellent academic results especially in last year’s public examinations. Mr. Chang noted that SMK Taman Desa had indeed lived up to the spirit of its school cheer, “We Excel, We Are the Best of the Best”. After his speech, Mr. Chang launched this memorable Excellence Awards Ceremony by pressing a computer keyboard and triggering off a multimedia presentation of the school.
The presentation of certificates, prizes and awards for all the excellent students, was interspersed with presentations from the Chinese Orchestra, the Choral Speakers and the Choir. The Chinese Orchestra, under the diligent supervision of Cik Ng Nyok Moi, gave a powerful rendition of a couple of repertoires, namely ‘Song of Strength’ and ‘The Gathering’. Harmonious melody filled the Arena Wira and mesmerized all present. The all-girls Choral Speakers, comprising Forms 3, 4 and 5 students, rendered the poem, ‘The Daffodils’ by William Wordsworth. The girls, under the tutelage of Cik Liew Lee Foong, gave an excellent oral presentation, with synchronised movements, precise pronunciation, enunciation and diction. Everyone was duly impressed with the girls. The final performance of the day was given by the School Choir, which presented two songs, ‘Dirgahayu Tanah Airku’ and ‘Mamma Mia’. The Choir had everyone moving and tapping their feet to the rhythm of the songs. Two choir members, Roland Ng and Carlotta Koh, sang the solo parts of ‘Dirgahayu’ like professional song birds. Kudos to them and to Cik Chua Lee Hwee, the conscientious choir teacher who trained and inspired the students to sing and perform so well.
The Excellence Awards ceremony culminated with the presentation of awards to the Best Overall Students in all the three public examinations. The Best Overall Student Award for the STPM (Science Stream) was presented to Loke Chia Khang whereas the award for the STPM (Art Stream) was won by Boh Woan Yun.
